Mr. William Bates

I am recently retired from a 40-year career at Amtrak where I have served in a variety of roles. During my tenure there I held the following union positions for SMART Union -Transportation Division, formally the United Transportation Union, and received recognition for my contributions.

In 1992, I was elected the Local Union President of Local 1933 in Washington DC.

From March 2008 to August 2021, I was elected the first African American District of Columbia Legislative Director in the 140 years of the SMART Transportation Division.

In 2009, Amtrak awarded me the Charles Luna Safety Achievement Award.

In June 2010, I was appointed as a member of the Obama administration ‘s newly created Federal Transit Authority (FTA) Transit Rail Advisory Committee for Safety (TRACS). I was reappointment in 2012 for an additional two years.

In 2011, I was elected the Local Chairperson of SMART Union - Transportation Division Local 1933.

In 2011, I was awarded the Governor’s Transportation Safety Award by the Governor of Virginia. 

In January 2011, until my retirement in August 2021, I was Co-Director of SMART Division - TD National Transportation Safety Team which assisted with rail accident investigations with the NTSB.
